Starvation Response

ANSWER: D. Insulin

In times of starvation, glucagon is released by the alpha cells of the pancreas to signal to the liver to break down stored glycogen into free glucose molecules that can enter the blood stream where they are lacking. Ghrelin plays a role in signalling the urge to be ‘hungry’. Ketone bodies are released by the liver in times of starvation (especially carbohydrate starvation) where they are picked up by cells, converted into acetyl-CoA, entering the TCA cycle.
